Computer Sleeps With CPU Running Max

I do some HD video recoding that uses "x264.exe" to recode the video on my Win 7 Ult/64 system.
During that process (which is obviously multi-threaded), all 4 cores of my Intel CPU will be running close to 100%.
You would think that with the CPU maxed out, there would be no way the computer could sleep, but it DOES!  I believe the default is 30 minutes to sleep on a new Win 7 install.  These recodes can take HOURS, so I was shocked to see the computer sleeping
on the first job I ran.  I "woke it up" & the recode process started back up as if nothing happened!
FYI, on a Vista computer, sleep & this program works properly.  The encode job will run, then the computer will sleep.  Same thing on an XP Pro machine set to "hibernate".
Why is this program "invisible" to the "sleep timer" in Win 7?
