Can List Styles be based on Normal?

Hello,

At our firm we have users with various default fonts and sizes saved to their Normal template but have standardized outline styles that are used across the firm.
We have a macro that brings up a dialog box where users can select the style they want and it will
be copied from a template and applied to their current document.

In MS Word 2003 this worked well because all of the styles were based on Normal and would adapt accordingly to the default font in the document.
We are now moving to Word 2010 and I have been re-stylizing these outlines using List Styles and while I can chose
to make the Headings based on Normal, I can't seem to find a way to make the actual numbering scheme to be based on Normal as well.
My only option it seems is to select a specific font that does not change regardless of the default in the document.
How can I get the numbering to become based on Normal?

This is all based on my presumption that multileveled lists in Word 2003 do not translate to Word 2010. The 2003 numbering seems to no longer be linked when applied in 2010. Is this correct or am I missing something? Is possible to write a macro that could
just "translate" these styles to 2010 for me?

List styles can be based on normal.

The normal style no longer sets the default font in Word 2010 (2007).

List styles in Word 2003 templates will work as well in Word 2010 as they did in Word 2003.

I would strongly advise following the step-by-step instructions given by Shauna Kelly in
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word 2007 and Word 2010 and
not using the buttons on the ribbon! If your styles were not set up using this procedure in Word 2003 they are prone to breaking.
