Alpha 5 based program not compatable with windows 7 [Solved]

Alpha 5 based program not compatable with windows 7

I have a business specific program that runs in an alpha 5 environment.  I've checked the compatability and have changed the settings to load via windows xp (which matches my previous computer).

This program still does not even load and still gives me an incompatability issue.  Any suggestions, as this is our main scheduling program????

Hello Leanne12,

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Answers Forum.

Windows XP mode was created so small businesses could use legacy programs and still stay current in their operating systems.

To use Windows XP Mode, you should first download and install
Windows Virtual PC, which is the program that runs virtual operating systems on your computer.
Then, you can download and install
Windows XP Mode, which is a fully licensed version of Windows XP with Service Pack 3.

Running Windows XP Mode requires:

1.
Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions.
2.
A computer capable of hardware virtualization.
This means your computer has a central processing unit (CPU) with either Intel-VT or AMD-V virtualization features.
3.
Virtualization features turned on in your computer’s basic input/output system (BIOS).

To determine whether your computer’s CPU is capable of hardware virtualization, go to the Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC support website and download a utility that can check whether your Intel or AMD CPU is compatible.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx

To find your brand of processor so you can download the appropriate utility, click the Start button , right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
Under System, next to Processor, you can see what type of CPU you have.

Even if your CPU can run Windows XP Mode, you might also need to turn on virtualization settings in your computer’s BIOS.
Procedures vary depending on the BIOS manufacturer.

Manually editing the Windows registry

Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION keys is not recommended unless you are PC service professional. Incorrectly editing your registry can stop your PC from functioning and create irreversible damage to your operating system. In fact, one misplaced comma can prevent your PC from booting entirely!

Caution: Unless you an advanced PC user, we DO NOT recommend editing the Windows registry manually. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To manually repair your Windows registry, first you need to create a backup by exporting a portion of the registry related to MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION (eg. Windows Operating System):

  • Click the Start button.
  • Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
  • While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
  • You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
  • Click Yes.
  • A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
  • Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
  • In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
  • From the File menu, choose Export.
  • In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
  • In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
  • In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
  • Click Save.
  • The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
  • You now have a backup of your MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION-related registry entry.
